In 1708 he was appointed court organist in Weimar where he
composed most of his works for organ. In 1717 he
became court kapellmeister to the young Prince Leopold. He
moved to Leipzig in 1723 where he was responsible for music
in the four main churches of the city. In Leipzig he
occupied himself with the collection and publication of many
of his earlier compositions. He was nearly forgotten after his
death, but he was re-discovered in the late nineteenth
century. Today he is regarded as one of the greatest. |
