Beethoven was the son of a Kapelle singer and grandson of a Kapellmeister. He first studied the viola. He moved to Vienna in 1792, studied with Haydn, and earned a solid reputation as a pianist and composer. By 1815 he was losing his hearing and had to give up concert work. His unique music compositions sounded strange to many of his contemporary audiences. Beethoven has had a great influence on many generations of composers.
