Brahms was born in Hamburg.
He mastered piano, studied composition and picked up experience
arranging for his father's orchestra. While on tour as a pianist he
met Schumann who hailed him as a genius. In 1863 he went to
Vienna where he worked as a conductor and teacher. He befriended
Schumann's widow, the pianist Clara Schumann, and the two remained
close the rest of their lives. As a romantic era composer he created masterpieces
in almost every genre, however he retained many classical
roots.
