Chopin left his humble origins in Poland for Paris in
1830 where he soon earned a reputation as a sensitive piano
genius. He composed mainly for the piano, making a remarkable
use of the the newly developed instrument.
For 10 years he had a relationship with the woman
novelist, George Sand. When he broke off with her in 1847 he
was seriously ill with tuberculosis.
