George Gershwin was born in Brooklyn, grew up in the streets and
taught himself music. He started out as a song plugger and accompanist
in Tin Pan Alley. In his
teens he began to compose popular songs and produced a succession of
musicals. Lyrics were
generally by his brother Ira (1896-1983).
Gershwin went to Hollywood in 1936 and wrote songs for films.
He died in Hollywood, July 11, 1937. He was a sensitive
songwriter with a great gift of melody who brought jazz, folk and
classical traditions together.
