Handel studied law at the University of Halle, but moved to Hamburg
when his father died in 1703. He played violin and harpsichord
with the Hamburg Opera Orchestra and began to compose. From
1706 to 1710 he visited Italy to master Italian musical styles.
His opera Rinaldo enjoyed great success in London which
pulled him there to visit. He liked England so much he settled
there permanently. He wrote and produced several
operas for several English companies, but switched to the more
popular oratorio with English texts. During
the last years of his life he was nearly blind but continued his
work. He died in London and was buried in Westminster Abbey.
