| Haydn got his
musical training at a cathedral in Vienna. He was appointed
conductor of Prince Esterhazy's private orchestra in 1761.
Five years later he was promoted to kappelmeister. He held
this position for 30 years. It was an ideal position because
he could work with very talented musicians while he composed
symphonies and string quartets. In 1790 he got a
contract for an appearance in London where he was hailed as a
genius. He retired to Vienna and died there during the French
occupation. |
