| Liszt was a
Hungarian child prodigy who had performed all over Europe by
the time he was eleven. In 1821 he went to Vienna to
study piano with Czerny and composition with Salieri.
Two years later he was performing in Paris and had many
wealthy fans. He was as famous for his piano technique
as his affairs with women. In 1835 he eloped with
Countess Marie d'Agoult to Switzerland. He left her
nine years later. In 1848 he settled in Weimar, with
Princess Carolyne Sayn-Wittgenstein, and was appointed Court
Kapellmeister. He abandoned his performing career and
concentrated on composing. In 1861 he moved to Rome
where he composed many religious works. The last 25
years of his life were divided among Rome, Weimar and
Budapest |
