Rossini was "born in a trunk." His mother was an
opera singer and his father, a horn-player. He had his first
opera produced when he was 18. He had several more produced in
various Italian opera centers of the day. In 1824 he settled
in Paris. William Tell, his last opera, was produced
there in 1829. He returned to Italy in 1830. Due to bad
health he stopped composing, but he remained popular.
25 years later he returned to Paris and started composing again, but
not opera. He concentrated on piano works and ensembles.
