Schumann was the son of a writer and publisher. After
university he studied piano with Friedrich Wieck. He fell in
love with Clara Wieck, his daughter, who went on to become a famous
concert pianist. They married in 1840. Schumann's own
piano-playing ability was hampered by weak fingers in one hand, so
he concentrated on composing. They moved to Leipzig, Dresden and then Dusseldorf, where he was
appointed municipal director of music. In 1854 he had a mental
breakdown and was committed to an asylum where he died two years
later. |
