After completing studies at the St. Petersburg Conservatory he moved to Moscow to teach at a conservatory there. A rich widow offered him financial support which made it possible for him to quit teaching and concentrate on composition. His music is thoroughly Russian but shows more international influence than many of the Russian nationalists.
