Vivaldi entered the priesthood at an early age, and because of his
red hair, was called the Red Priest. He studied violin, and
for 36 years, beginning in 1704, he was teacher, conductor and
composer at a Venetian conservatory and orphanage for girls.
He traveled all over Europe producing operas. But his music
fell out of style and he died totally destitute. His total
output was enormous but his instrumental music is mostly admired
today. Great quantities of his work were discovered in the
1920's, and much of it is performed and recorded today.
