Wagner studied drama in Dresden and music in Leipzig. In 1832
he became chorus master at the Wurzburg Theater. He married at
23 to an opera singer, Minna Planer. He became musical
director at a theater in Riga, where he began his first opera, Rienzi.
In 1842 they went to Dresden for its premier.
He was then appointed Kapellmeister at the Dresden court..
In 1862 he parted with Minna and in 1870 married Liszt's daughter,
Cosima. King Ludwig II of Bavaria lent his
support to many of Wagner's projects, including the establishment of
his own theater and festival at Bayreuth. Wagner brought all the arts together in his
operas. His music made use of a leading motif (Leitmotiv) to
unite melodies associated with characters, incidents or ideas. |
